Land Cover Dynamics along the Urban–Rural Gradient of the Port-au-Prince Agglomeration (Republic of Haiti) from 1986 to 2021

The landscape of the Port-au-Prince agglomeration in Republic Haiti has undergone profound changes linked to (peri-)urban expansion supported by rapid demographic growth. We quantify land cover dynamics along urban–rural gradient using Landsat images from 1986, 1998, 1999, 2010, and 2021 coupled with geographic information systems ecology analysis tools. results show that over 35 years acreage urban zone increased seven-fold while peri-urban area five-fold, detriment rural zone, which was reduced 14%. composition are characterized a progression built-up bare zones fields contrast more accentuated regression vegetation zone. study significant due high demand for housing resulting population growth, context lack territorial development planning public authorities. This impacts sustainability socio-economic ecological processes an where populations highly dependent on plant resources.
